EU Council of Ministers:
Following the green light at the weekend in the US Congress for further military aid for Ukraine, the EU foreign ministers reaffirmed their support for Kiev on Monday, but did not hold out the prospect of further supplies for the air defense systems.
Alongside Germany, Sweden, Poland, Greece and Romania, the Netherlands and Spain are among the European countries that have Patriot batteries. The surface-to-air missiles are considered to be very effective against hypersonic missiles. The Russian military is currently increasing its use of these against Ukraine's infrastructure.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleba addressed the EU foreign ministers in a statement via video link, saying: "Now that you are all sitting around the table, it is time to act and not to discuss." EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell confirmed that things had now "matured". "Everything has been said. Now is the time to act", he appealed.
TV tower in Kharkiv hit
Meanwhile, the television tower in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv was reportedly badly damaged in a Russian attack. On Monday, videos on social networks showed the top of the 240-metre-high tower plummeting to the ground - a cloud of explosions was also shown (see image below).
Regional governor Oleh Synjehubow confirmed that a "television infrastructure object" had been hit. There were reportedly no casualties.
Russians want to stop access to Ukrainian information
The television tower in Kharkiv, which went into operation in 1981, provides the region with radio and television reception and is located around six kilometers from the city center. The eastern Ukrainian city of over a million inhabitants has been under heavy Russian fire since mid-March. The power supply has already been disrupted and electricity is only available on an hourly basis. In addition to critical infrastructure, the Russians are apparently also aiming to cut off the population from Ukrainian sources of information.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, the attack was part of a targeted attempt by the Russians to make Ukraine's second largest city uninhabitable. Zelenskyi added that he had informed US President Joe Biden about the airstrike, which had been carried out a few minutes before their telephone conversation on Monday evening.
