Magnitude 6.3 and 6.0
Another violent earthquake in eastern Taiwan
The east of Taiwan has once again been shaken by violent earth tremors. According to the responsible weather authority, the quakes with magnitudes of 6.3 and 6.0 occurred on Tuesday morning (local time). The tremors were also clearly felt in the Taiwanese capital Taipei.
The authorities had already recorded a series of quakes on Monday, the strongest of which reached a magnitude of 5.9. There were initially no reports of injuries or damage. However, according to the fire department, they observed two empty buildings that were damaged in the severe quake at the beginning of the month and are now leaning.
Deaths after earthquake a few days ago
At least 17 people were killed in an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 on April 3. It was the most severe quake in Taiwan for a quarter of a century. Numerous buildings in the city of Hualien were damaged and the quake triggered landslides in the surrounding mountains, blocking a number of roads.
Earthquakes are not uncommon
Earthquakes occur frequently in Taiwan because two tectonic plates collide near the island. Strict building regulations therefore apply. In 1999, around 2,400 people lost their lives in the most devastating earthquake in Taiwan's history.
