More cultural theater offerings for children and young people in five outer districts are now a reality. 

The city has grown by around 400,000 people over the past two decades. The strongest population growth has been in the outer districts. As many as 43 percent of Viennese live in Liesing, Favoriten, Simmering, Donaustadt and Floridsdorf.

Vienna is now the youngest federal state, emphasized city leader Michael Ludwig (SPÖ). However, cultural participation is not always easy outside the Gürtel. That is why the focus is on expanding the cultural infrastructure in those places where many families live.

In any case, a broad range of performing arts should be included. It ranges from spoken and musical theater to performance, circus and puppet theater. The target audience includes both families and school classes.(Bild: FETZ /Studio F)

With the new "Young Theater Vienna" project. The initiative is intended to enable new plays to be performed there in future and is aimed at a young audience aged between 2 and 22. The target group is children and young people who do not have easy access to culture. Mayor Michael Ludwig and City Councillor for Culture Veronica Kaup-Hasler (both SPÖ) presented the plans together with theater maker Stephan Rabl on Wednesday. Numerous existing venues are to be used; no new buildings are planned. As far as the program is concerned, existing productions will be used. But there will also be premieres.

Cooperation with institutions such as the adult education center is also planned. Existing rooms will be used. If the project is successful, districts 12 to 20 will follow. The first productions will start next spring. The first season will then run from September 2025 to June 2026.
