FLIGHT TO NEW HEIGHTS CONTINUES
Mattersburg dreams of the Bundesliga again
Mattersburger SV dominates the Burgenland soccer lower division. But the promotion is not set to end in the Burgenlandliga next season either, with the club once again becoming a real fan magnet. Striker Mirza Sejmenovic hopes that the club will make the breakthrough and be back in the professional league in a few years' time.
The aim was to stay in the 2nd division for a maximum of three years," says Mirza Sejmenovic. The fact that it worked out at the first attempt is as astonishing as it is impressive. Founded in 2020 after the SVM went out of business, Mattersburger SV has been ploughing its way through the red and gold lower division ever since. Next stop: Burgenlandliga!
"We have a strong squad. A good mix of many young players with potential, plus a few experienced players." Sejmenovic is one of them, scoring almost week after week for the unbeaten league leaders. "That's what we want to stay," grins the "lower house Ronaldo". Next weekend, the title can also be mathematically secured. After just a few rounds played, nobody doubted that promotion was on the cards.
Lonely top
And the successes naturally also generate euphoria, with the return to the Pappelstadion acting like a magnet for the fans. "We have an average of 1,000 spectators at home games, that's huge." That makes them the only team in Burgenland to do so. Against Rohrbach, there were once even 3,600 (!) - making them one of the top 5 in the whole of Austria!
But the end of the line is far from being reached. With an enterprising chairman Manfred Strodl at the helm, MSV is striving for higher things. "We can also play at the top of the Burgenlandliga. Maybe we can make it through. But we remain humble and are under no pressure and in no rush."
The professional level is realistic in five to eight years. The basis for this is certainly right.
Mirza Sejmenovic über ambitionierte Mattersburger Ziele
In the long term, the club has an extremely ambitious goal and dreams of greater things. Sejmenovic: "I believe that the club can play in the Bundesliga again. In five to eight years, the professional level is realistic. The basis for this, especially with the strong young talent, is certainly right."
