Klagenfurt finances
“No money for the new conference center!”
Klagenfurt's latest financial statements reveal a large plus. However, the city is also facing high expenditure.
There was much criticism at Thursday's meeting of the Klagenfurt municipal council. Andreas Skorianz (FP) reported from Brussels: "The switch to climate neutrality will cost 900 million euros. I don't hear any answers in Klagenfurt as to where this money is supposed to come from." The financial statements for 2023 were approved with the votes of the SP, Team Kärnten and the VP. "The operating surplus amounts to 45.6 million euros," says SP finance officer Philipp Liesnig.
The city has debts of 138 million euros, compared to assets of 1.3 billion euros.

Liesnig explains: "The St. Peter and Spitalsberg educational facilities are being expanded, and the ASV and KAC sports facilities are also being renovated. There is no money left for a conference center, although Klagenfurt would need it when the Koralm Railway goes into operation." Klagenfurt would have to pay five million of the total costs of 20 million euros. "Perhaps external financing would help."
Klagenfurt Airport is being rebuilt. The new airport owners, the state and the city, have released a capital injection of 13.7 million euros for the next few years, almost ten million of which will be invested in the current expansion. "Unfortunately, nothing has happened in recent years. The bistro on the first floor is being extended and a terrace is being built. The restaurant is also affected," says the new Managing Director Maximilian Wildt. "The departure area for private aircraft is finally being renovated."
There are now dedicated airports for private aircraft worldwide, whose owners have higher standards, says Wildt. Klagenfurt still has a lot of catching up to do in this respect. "Six destinations will be permanently served from Klagenfurt this summer. The terminal is being renovated and the gate areas are being expanded for possible dual use. We want to do something for our passengers with the refurbishment. Some major projects are underway," says Wildt.
