NATO Secretary General:
“Not too late to win for Ukraine”
In view of the promised military aid for Kiev, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg believes that a victory for Ukraine in the war against Russia is still possible. "It is not too late to win for Ukraine," he said on Thursday at an award ceremony in Berlin.
"In recent months, the NATO allies have not provided the support we promised," criticized Stoltenberg in a speech at the award ceremony for the Eric M. Warburg Prize in the German capital.
What is the Eric M. Warburg Prize?
The prize, named after the Hamburg banker Eric Moritz Warburg, is awarded by the German-American network Atlantik-Brücke to honor individuals who have contributed to securing and consolidating Germany's place in the Atlantic Alliance (i.e. NATO).
"These delays have consequences. Ukraine was outgunned, so Russia was able to advance on the front. Ukraine lacked an air defense, so that more Russian missiles and drones were able to hit their targets. And Ukraine lacked precise means of attack, allowing Russia to concentrate more forces. But it's not too late for Ukraine to win, because more support is on the way," said Stoltenberg. As long as the allies kept their promise to supply more weapons, this was possible, Stoltenberg said confidently.
Setbacks due to lack of ammunition and weapons
Ukraine had recently suffered setbacks on the battlefield against the Russian armed forces due to a lack of ammunition and weapons. However, according to the AFP news agency, Stoltenberg pointed out that the US Congress had finally passed a bill to support Ukraine to the tune of billions of euros.
"It is our responsibility"
Other countries, including the UK, Germany and the Netherlands, have also made new pledges. "It is now our responsibility to turn these pledges into actual deliveries of weapons and ammunition - and to do so quickly," said Stoltenberg.
