"We know what happened"
Weinstein verdict overturned: Hollywood shocked!
The overturning of a rape conviction against former film mogul Harvey Weinstein has caused disappointment and bewilderment in Hollywood. Criticism came from Rosanna Arquette, Ashley Judd and Mira Sorvino, among others, who have accused the former film producer of sexual assault.
Weinstein was "rightly convicted" in 2020 and the overturning of the verdict was "regrettable", Arquette told the industry publication "Hollywood Reporter". "As a survivor, I am more than disappointed."
"We know what happened"
Ashley Judd, the first actress to go public with allegations of abuse against Weinstein, said on Instagram: "This is unfair to the survivors. We live in our truth. We know what happened."
Justice on the side of sex offenders
"Horrified!" reacted actress Mira Sorvino on the online service X. The formerly very powerful producer is a "serial sex offender who has raped/harmed 200 women or more". She is "disgusted" that the justice system is more favorable to sex offenders than victims.
Actress Rose McGowan, who has accused Weinstein of rape, said on Instagram about the overturned verdict: "They will never overturn who we are." She thanked everyone who had stood up against the abuse with "courage" and "unity".
Sentenced to 23 years in prison in 2020
Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison in New York in 2020 for sexual abuse and rape. The now 72-year-old had appealed against this. On Thursday, the Supreme Court in New York overturned the verdict due to procedural errors and ordered a retrial.
Among other things, the court criticized the fact that women were admitted as witnesses in the trial whose cases had not been the subject of the indictment. However, the decision to overturn the verdict was made by a very narrow margin of four votes to three.
Following the trial in New York, Weinstein was sentenced to an additional 16 years in prison in Los Angeles for rape and sexual assault. The overturning of the conviction in New York is unlikely to have any effect on this verdict, criminal law professor Aya Gruper told the AFP news agency.
#MeeToo movement triggered
The revelations about the once celebrated film producer sparked the #MeToo movement in 2017. Dozens of women, including stars such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie, had accused him of sexual assault and even rape.
Weinstein denied all accusations and spoke of consensual sex. In many cases, the alleged acts were already time-barred.
