Immeasurable grief
Senta Berger’s husband Michael Verhoeven is dead
The filmmaker ("The White Rose") Michael Verhoeven is dead. The husband of Austrian actress Senta Berger died in Munich earlier this week after a short illness at the age of 85.
Berger and Verhoeven had been married since 1966. Director Simon Verhoeven, the couple's son, confirmed to Bild that his father had already been buried in the most private of settings in Munich.
"Unimaginably painful"
"A world has been lost. It is unimaginably painful," said Verhoeven about his father's death.
Performed on the theater stage at an early age
Michael Verhoeven was born in Berlin on July 13, 1938, the son of actress Doris Kiesow and director and actor Paul Verhoeven. The family later moved to Munich. He gained his first experience as an actor as a nine-year-old in small theater plays, then in the 1950s in films such as "Das fliegende Klassenzimmer" and "Der Pauker" with Heinz Rühmann.
In the 1960s, he founded Sentana Filmproduktion GmbH together with his wife Senta Berger. One of his first projects as a director, his experimental anti-Vietnam War film "O.K.", caused a scandal at the 1970 Berlinale because the American jury president George Stevens felt insulted and the jury finally broke up without any prizes being awarded.
Multifaceted work
Michael Verhoeven also dealt intensively with National Socialism in his work, for example in the 1982 film "The White Rose" about the resistance of Sophie Scholl and like-minded people. The satire "The Terrible Girl" (1990), about attempts to cover up Nazi crimes, was nominated for an Oscar.
Verhoeven also filmed entertainment formats such as the ZDF series "Die schnelle Gerdi" (1989) with his wife Senta Berger as a Munich cab driver. In 2016, he co-produced the successful comedy "Willkommen bei den Hartmanns", which was directed by his son Simon. His younger son Luca is also active in the film industry.
Verhoeven's work has been honored with numerous awards, including the Bavarian Film Award and the German Film Award.
