“Koan Rangnick!” Bayern fans launch protests
Following the rejections of master coach Xabi Alonso, Germany's national coach Julian Nagelsmann and Aston Villa coach Unai Emery, ÖFB team boss Ralf Rangnick is now said to be Bayern's number one coach of choice. But the fans of the German record champions see things very differently. They have launched protests on the internet against our successful coach - perhaps soon in the stadium too ...
The hashtags "KoanRangnick" and "rotgegenrangnick" are currently being used on X (formerly Twitter) to create a huge stir against Rangnick as Thomas Tuchel's successor. For many, the ÖFB team boss simply doesn't fit in with the big FC Bayern. They don't want to become "RB Munich" either. In addition, Rangnick would only be available to Bayern from July due to the 2024 European Championship with Austria, meaning he would not be able to put together a new team.
Much of the criticism of Rangnick is already reminiscent of the fan protests of 2011, when Munich signed Manuel Neuer from FC Schalke 04. It is quite possible that the first banners against the 65-year-old will already be seen in the stadium on Saturday.
Fans want Tuchel - is this the turning point?
Under "KoanRangnick", the fans are not only arguing against the ÖFB coach, but also for Thomas Tuchel to stay. "As FC Bayern fans, we would like to draw attention to the fact that Thomas Tuchel is the right man and that he should be kept!" it says.
The online petition entitled "We want Juppel (Thomas Tuchel) and not Rangnick!" wants Tuchel to stay in Munich beyond the summer and had more than 12,000 signatures by midday on Friday. This is an issue "that has and must not have any priority, even if it is now a pleasing topic for me," said Tuchel on Friday. The next eleven days could be "about nothing else but soccer."
Contract until 2025
Sports director Peter Schöttel will be pleased with the development. Rangnick has a contract with the ÖFB until the end of the World Cup qualifiers at the end of 2025, which would be automatically extended until the summer of 2026 if the team participates in the finals in North America. There is no exit clause in the contract, so a transfer fee would be due if Bayern actually commit to the 65-year-old and Rangnick himself agrees to a contract in Munich.
