Xiaomi SU7: Mobile phone car surprises on first contact
Cell phone manufacturer Xiaomi has landed a direct hit with its electric car: Customers are virtually ripping the car out of the Chinese electronics giant's hands. The SU7 is making a huge appearance at the auto show in Beijing and is already in showrooms - alongside washing machines, fridges and vacuum cleaners. We had the opportunity to at least take a test drive in Beijing. Getting a test drive is more than difficult with the current rush.
Over 75,000 units were ordered in the first four weeks, and the car is already sold out for weeks. 5781 vehicles have been delivered to customers in this time, and by the end of the year, 100,000 units are to be delivered, more than initially targeted.
Appearance in the showroom
The impression on first contact: surprisingly solid, frighteningly good from a European perspective. The Xiaomi SU7 looks even better in person than in photos and is also really well made.
The design is neither standardized nor a copy of some Western sedan, but independent, well-proportioned and even somehow emotional. The drag coefficient is 0.195.
The only thing missing is a brand story, which one would like to find here and there. But Xiaomi doesn't have anything like that. It is most likely to remind you of a Porsche Taycan. However, the SU7 would also make a splendid successor to the Kia Stinger.
Only the bump on the roof of the top model, the radar or lidar eye, is rather irritating. In complete contrast to the interior. It is very tidy and is dominated by a 16-inch touchscreen in the middle. The small speedometer screen rotates when you start the system - a nice gimmick.
There are practically no buttons - except for the steering wheel, which even has two extra sporty buttons. Another homage to Porsche. What can be operated and touched feels good. The materials look classy, with artificial leather everywhere and stitching for sporty elegance. The door panels flow seamlessly into the dashboard.
A floating center console offers space for two cell phones and two cups, and a handbag can easily fit underneath.
There is plenty of space, even in the rear seats. No wonder with a length of almost five meters and a wheelbase of three meters. However, you do miss the so-called foot garage of the Porsche Taycan: The floor is simply too high, you have to bend your legs a lot.
There is over 100 liters of frunk space under the hood, and the trunk also has a capacity of 517 liters, including the compartment under the floor.
Drive at Porsche level
We were unable to try out the powertrains. There are several options. The base model has 400 volts, a 299 hp rear-wheel drive and runs at 210 km/h. The top model operates at 800 volts, has two motors with a total of 673 hp and all-wheel drive, with a top speed of 265 km/h. The sprint to 100 km/h is said to take 2.8 seconds. It only takes 10 minutes to recharge the 390 kilometer range. Total range: over 800 kilometers according to Chinese standards.
Prices between just under 28,000 and just under 40,000 euros. We are hoping for a test drive soon - and that the price premium will not be too hefty when the Xiaomi finds its way to the West. And of course, the Xiaomi SU7 still has to prove that it drives at least nearly as well as it looks.
