A black eye for Vienna’s Green dual leadership
Judith Pühringer and Peter Kraus remain the leadership duo of the Vienna Green Party. They are to lead the state party into the upcoming Vienna elections with reduced support. Justice Minister Alma Zadić received significantly more support as Vienna's top vote-getter for the National Council elections.
Judith Pühringer and Peter Kraus were confirmed as the leadership duo of the Vienna Greens - also for the upcoming Vienna elections - with 76.8 percent of the 344 delegate votes at the state assembly at the Vienna Exhibition Center on Saturday. At their first election in 2021, the approval rating was 83.6 percent. The much-maligned regional leader Birgit Hebein even achieved 94.2 percent approval as a city councillor in 2019.
"Honest announcements and courageous answers"
In a joint speech before the election, Pühringer and Kraus promised "honest announcements and courageous answers" for the city: "Those who really love Vienna are courageous and care about the city and all Viennese", the two set out the rhetoric for the upcoming Vienna election campaign. They are committed to changing everyday life in the city: "for the better, climate-friendly and socially just."
Belt and two lines as urgent concrete concerns
The Green dual leadership's vision of the Vienna of the future: "An everyday life in which we can get from A to B quickly without having to rely on the car. An everyday life in which everyone is protected from the summer heat and not just those who have a terrace. And an everyday life in which we are naturally supplied with cheap and green energy because we have managed to phase out oil and gas." In terms of concrete projects, Pühringer and Kraus want to continue their efforts to redesign the Gürtel and the Zweierlinie.
Zadić's love of Vienna
At 97.4%, the approval rating for Justice Minister Alma Zadić as the leader of the Vienna state list in the National Council election was significantly higher than for the Green dual leadership. She was particularly pleased about this position, she said, because: "Vienna is my city, which I love." In the National Council, she wants to "work with all my strength and passion for a country that offers every child equal and fair opportunities, regardless of where they come from, what religion they are or how much money their parents have in their bank account".
In addition to the National Council elections and the Vienna elections, the upcoming European elections were also discussed at the provincial assembly. Party leader Werner Kogler used his speech to warn against European trends away from democracy and towards autocracy. Europe must protect itself from the "criminal regime" of Russia and its right-wing and far-right friends in Europe, warned Kogler.
