On Saturday night, a 44-year-old man from Vienna grabbed an axe and a machete to scare off potential attackers in a bar brawl in Windischgarsten. Around seven people had got into an argument and started fighting. When the Viennese then went to his car and fetched the weapons, the opponents fled.

At around 4.20 a.m. on Saturday, the Windischgarsten police were called to a pub because of a dangerous threat involving a machete and axe. On arrival, nobody could be found at first. It turned out from the telephone report that the unknown man had fled in a car. A search was immediately launched by several patrols and was successful.

Arrested without resistance
The 44-year-old driver from Vienna was arrested without resistance by a patrol in a room in the accommodation at around 6 am. The machete and axe were found in his vehicle. Interrogation of the victims and the 44-year-old revealed that a fight had previously taken place between 6 and 7 people inside and therefore outside the bar. However, the Viennese man was not involved.

Wanted to defend himself
Nevertheless, the 44-year-old had taken the machete and axe out of his vehicle, but had not actively threatened anyone. All the people who had previously been fighting with each other then fled on foot. The 44-year-old stated that he had wanted to defend himself in the event of an attack. As he had also driven his vehicle under the influence of alcohol, his driving license was temporarily confiscated. He will be reported to the district authority and the public prosecutor's office.
