Liberating blow?
VW ID.2: This is how it’s going to be with the want-to-have!
At VW, the signs are pointing to change. Instead of being cheap and unemotional, the Wolfsburg cars of the future should also be attractively designed on the inside, arouse emotions - and still remain affordable. One axe to grind in this direction is the VW ID.2. If it's anywhere near as cool as the prototype we were allowed to take a close look at (or camera), they'll snatch it out of your hands.
At the "Car Design Event" in Munich, the eagerly awaited electric compact was one of the exhibits - or rather two of them, as the Drivers & Business Club not only featured the design model of the ID.2all, which we reported on a year ago, but also a prototype with the interior concept.
And it has it all. High-quality materials, intelligent details and instruments that will bring tears of emotion to the eyes of nostalgics: The speedometer of the original Golf can be displayed on the digital instrument cluster. Alternatively, there is also a VW Beetle-style design. Or completely normal digital displays. There are also corresponding views for the central touchscreen.
Clear design, but not the usual VW plastic, but materials that you like to look at and touch, high-quality, soft plastics, dashboard covered with fabric, not even the uninspired pressed screens, as was recently done at VW.
A hearty "Welcome back!" also for the four power window buttons! And there are no touch elements on the steering wheel, but small rollers that are easy to operate and real buttons.
Bigger on the inside than on the outside?
The VW ID.2 should offer a spaciousness on the exterior dimensions of a VW Polo that exceeds that of the Golf. The prototype gives us a glimpse of what we can expect in this respect: The rear bench seat can be folded up and reveals a lot of storage space - you could well do without a frunk. The charging cable, which is hidden under the double floor of the trunk in current VWs, can be easily stowed here.
This, in turn, is a keyword for the next sensational innovation: not just small items can fit under the trunk floor, but three huge crates of water. A real space miracle.
What is still missing is knee and legroom in the second row, and you have to bend your legs a lot because the floor is too high. However, this should change by the time the series version comes out. The reason is obvious: the interior model was built on the floor assembly of a VW T-Roc because the dimensions basically fit. But of course you don't have the possibilities of an electric platform here.
Out with the Beelzebub!
On the other hand, you can actually drive the interior VW, unlike the ID.2all, which only shows the design that the designers have come up with internally. There have never been door handles inserted into the rear windows; until now they always had to be real handles in the door.
This is an indication that many things will be possible at VW in the future that were previously unthinkable. Under the aegis of Herbert Diess, it is a lengthy undertaking to drive out fundamental cost-cutting decisions like Beelzebub.
Nevertheless, we shouldn't expect too much, for example that the ID.2, the so-called 25,000-euro car, will be in dealerships as early as 2025. No, the production version will first celebrate its world premiere at the end of next year in front of invited guests. It will be available to order in March 2026 and will roll into dealerships in the summer of 2026. Don't worry, good things take time. Also new at VW.
