US rapist sentenced to castration
A US man who impregnated a 14-year-old girl and then threatened his victim and family has received a rarely executed sentence. The 54-year-old will be castrated at the end of his prison sentence - the offender decided to have his manhood surgically removed if the worst comes to the worst.
A heinous punishment for an even more heinous crime: Glenn Sullivan from Springfield (state of Loisiana) had pleaded guilty in court this week to raping a 14-year-old girl multiple times. The judge sentenced Sullivan to 50 years in prison - and also ordered a physical castration. This involves a surgical procedure to remove the testicles.
First case of physical castration order
"I want to emphasize that I have ordered the chemical castration of three individuals, but to my knowledge this is the first physical castration that has been ordered," said Assistant District Attorney Brad Cascio. "I felt this case was strong enough and warranted such action," he added. Convicts can choose for themselves whether they prefer chemical or physical castration.
"Sex crimes against juveniles are the most vicious crimes we prosecute. I intend to use every tool available to us under the law, including corporal castration, to achieve justice for the children in our community," Cascio said.
DNA test proves paternity
The investigation got underway in the summer of 2022 after the young woman contacted the police. She explained that she had been raped several times by Sullivan at the age of 14 - she also became pregnant as a result of the sex crimes. "DNA testing ordered as part of the criminal investigation proved that Sullivan had impregnated her," a statement from authorities said.
District attorney praises victim's courage
Initially, the girl had remained silent about what the now 54-year-old had done to her. Sullivan had threatened her and her family with violence if she revealed anything about the incidents. "So many cases like this go unreported out of fear," said District Attorney Scott M. Perrilloux, praising the young woman's courage. "The strength it must have taken for this young woman to tell the truth despite threats and adversity is truly incredible."
A controversial Louisiana law passed in 2008 gives the state the power to castrate sex offenders under certain circumstances. The law stipulates that this procedure must be performed at least one week before a convict is released. However, since Sullivan would be more than 100 years old when he is released, it is unlikely that the castration will actually be carried out.
