On a trip to China
Tesla boss Elon Musk makes a surprise visit to China
The US car manufacturer Tesla has obtained approval in China for the latest version of automated driving FSD (Full Self-Driving). Company boss Elon Musk traveled to Beijing at the weekend, where he met with head of government Li Qiang. According to insiders, the green light for FSD was a key topic. On Sunday, the Chinese Automobile Association CAAM added the Tesla Models 3 and Y to the list of approved cars with self-driving mode.
On Monday, according to two insiders, Tesla agreed a license with Baidu, the Chinese search engine giant, for the use of navigation data. Musk also had time for a meeting with the head of Chinese battery giant CATL, Robin Zeng, before his plane took off again for the USA. Several people observed Zeng's visit to Musk in the hotel, CATL did not comment on it.
Tesla also did not comment on the company boss's non-publicly announced lightning visit, which could only be found out via insiders and the flight tracking app Flight Manager. Musk stated this month on the social media platform X that Tesla could make FSD available to customers in China "very soon".
Negotiations over the FSD software centered on permission to transfer driving data abroad. According to the CAAM association, Tesla models now meet China's data security requirements. Until now, Tesla has been unable to offer the software, which has been available for four years, despite high demand in China. The Chinese regulatory authorities had required Tesla to store all data collected by its Chinese fleet in Shanghai since 2021, meaning that the company could not transfer any data to the USA. However, according to insiders, this is necessary in order to train algorithms for autonomous driving technologies.
Competing Chinese car manufacturers and suppliers such as XPeng and Huawei Technologies have been trying to gain an advantage over Tesla by introducing similar software. Equity analysts at Wedbush therefore described the surprise visit as "an important moment for Tesla". Tesla competitor Xpeng now welcomed the permission for Tesla. "Only by bringing more good products and technologies to the market can the experience of the entire market and customers be improved, and this will accelerate the development of the market in a healthy way," explained Xpeng boss He Xiaopeng.
