Problem animal reported
Lower Austria faces first wolf cull
The "Krone" has now been able to verify an alarm report from Tierschutz Austria: A wolf is causing serious problems in the district of Zwettl (Lower Austria), according to reports of sightings.
The time could soon come for the first wolf to be officially shot in Lower Austria since imperial times. The Zwettl district authority confirms that it has recorded several sightings of a problem wolf. This is exciting in that the region, which is heavily affected by wolves, is otherwise reluctant to make reports.
Despite dog, wolf came close to family homes
According to unofficial "Krone" channels, a wolf in the Zwettl district approached several family homes within two meters several times. The predator had also remained unimpressed by dogs, which had whirled loudly in excitement.
Experienced and cautious region
People in the region are much more familiar with the presence of the predator than in other areas. After all, the first registered pack of wolves was found on the Allentsteig military training area and so-called wandering wolves also roam this rural area from time to time. Nevertheless, the district has been very cautious with official sighting reports so far.
Shooting concerns also due to possible mother animal
Tierschutz Austria reported to the "Krone" that a game warden of a hunting ground is said to have told the hunters that the wolf would have to be very conspicuous in order to shoot it. "But it's not," says spokesman Jonas von Einem, who is concerned that it could be a female or even a young mother.
No permit required in Lower Austria
In Lower Austria, hunters are now allowed to shoot a wolf without an official permit. A relatively detailed action plan has been drawn up for the detection and removal of the predator. Hunters are relatively free to use these criteria to determine for themselves whether the animal is a problem animal or not.
