Rush of tourists
Island of Capri doubles fee for day tourists
Venice is not the only place taking measures against mass tourism. In order to keep the crowds of tourists at bay, the southern Italian island of Capri has doubled the landing fee from 2.50 euros to five euros. This follows the examples of Venice and the Cinque Terre.
This fee will be charged until October 31 if visitors take a ferry from nearby Naples or Sorrento. The island hopes that this will generate revenue of four million euros this year.
The aim is to steer the flow of visitors. The money collected will also be used to cover the expenses incurred by the local population due to the large influx of tourists from April to October. With this measure, Capri wants to encourage people to visit the island more in winter.
Train fares in Cinque Terre increased
In order to curb mass tourism, the prices for train tickets to the northern Italian villages of the popular vacation region of Cinque Terre on the Ligurian Riviera have also been increased. Ticket prices will be doubled for all routes in the Cinque Terre between July and August, on all weekends from mid-March and on all public holidays.
In practice, the price increase means that tourists will now have to pay ten euros instead of five euros for a regional ticket for the six-kilometre route between Riomaggiore and Manarola.
Day tourists in Venice have to pay
Last Thursday, Venice introduced an entrance fee of five euros for day tourists for the first time, which will be charged on a total of 29 days this year (see video above). A so-called landing tax is now levied on several islands in Italy. This is paid, for example, by tourists who go ashore on the island of Procida in the Gulf of Naples.
From May 1 to October 31, the landing tax for non-residents on Procida will be 3.50 euros per person. During the six winter months, however, the landing fee will be reduced to 2.50 euros per person, also to promote non-seasonal tourism.
