New regulation
Name confusion about new stop in Seekirchen
The new ÖBB stop in the Flachgau district capital will not be called "Seekirchen Süd". ÖBB has made several suggestions for a new name. The surprising decision has now been made.
"There has been talk of the 'Seekirchen Süd' stop since the first plans in the 1990s," says Mayor Konrad Pieringer. This name was also used in recent years when the project was finalized.
When the first trains stop at the new station from the timetable change in December, it will say: "Next stop, Seekirchen Stadt". The town unanimously agreed on this name at the municipal council meeting on Monday. Incidentally, another proposal from ÖBB was "Seekirchen Ort". "That doesn't work at all, we are the district capital after all," says Pieringer.
There was actually always talk of "Seekirchen Süd". But "Seekirchen town" also fits well. I'm glad that the municipal representatives see it that way too.

Change due to a rule from 2019
The stop will connect the important, partly new, districts in the south to public transport. Robert Mosser from ÖBB explains why the name was changed in the first place: "If there are several stations in a municipality, an additional name is required. In most cases, these additional names have a geographical context. The current version of these regulations, which has been in force since 2019, stipulates that cardinal points are not to be used." This is because the past has shown that cardinal points are often not clear or plausible enough.
However, the rule introduced in 2019 only affects new stations. Existing stations and stops will therefore not be changed. The city will therefore have three stations in future: "Seekirchen Stadt", "Seekirchen am Wallersee" and "Wallersee".
