Missing man in the Stubai Valley: tips from hikers
In the course of the search for the 77-year-old man who set off on a hike in the Tyrolean Stubai Valley on Wednesday and never returned to his accommodation, a body was discovered on Friday. It was officially confirmed in the evening that it was indeed the missing man.
The 77-year-old left his accommodation in Neugasteig (municipality of Neustift) at around 12.30 pm on May 1st. According to the police, he wanted to go on a hike, but did not disclose his destination. The Austrian-born man, who lives in Belgium and is currently on vacation in the Stubai Valley, never returned. The alarm was raised in the evening.
Large search operation initially unsuccessful
A major search operation was launched. Police, fire department, mountain rescue, water rescue and sniffer dogs searched for the missing man. Drones and the police helicopter were also deployed. Paths, trails, forest slopes, local areas and the banks of the Ruetz River were searched.
The search was finally interrupted on Thursday with no results.
Clues: Did hikers see the missing man?
On Friday, the police continued the search once again. After a photo of the missing man was published, tips were received from hikers. They stated that they may have seen the 77-year-old on the ascent to the Mischbachalm.
On Friday afternoon, the police announced that a body had been found in the area following an inquiry by the "Krone" newspaper. It was later confirmed that it was the missing man. The man probably fell from a great height.
