Sebastian Ofner has been knocked out of the Masters tournament in Rome in the second round. The Styrian was beaten in three sets by Yoshihito Nishioka from Japan 3:6, 6:2 and 6:7(4) on Wednesday.
Sebastian Ofner lost in his first ever appearance in the Masters 1000 tournament in Rome on Wednesday. The Styrian, who turns 28 on Sunday, was beaten 3-6, 6-2, 6-7(4) in his first duel with Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka after 2:17 hours. Austria's number one was already leading 3-0 in the decisive tie-break before his opponent won six points in a row.
"At the moment, every match is simply difficult. I somehow always manage to keep the matches close, but at the moment I'm just not winning," said Ofner. He has lost many close matches this year. "All you can do is keep at it and see if the button opens again at some point."
Ofner had to give up his service in the opening game and he chased this deficit in vain in the first set. Although the Styrian had two chances to break back at 2:3, he missed them and then gave up his serve again at 3:6. The 46th-ranked player in the world managed to turn things around in the second round: After breaks at 3:2 and 5:2, Wolfgang Thiem's protégé served out to nil to tie the set.
3:0 lead given away
The deciding set went into a tie-break without losing a service game and things initially looked good for Ofner. But the aforementioned 3:0 lead was not enough for Ofner's fourth victory in a Masters 1000 tournament.
Ofner is now expected to play the tournament in Geneva (starting May 20) before the French Open in Paris on May 26, where he was eliminated in the round of 16 last year.
