Sebastian Ofner had to admit defeat to the Norwegian Casper Ruud in the round of 16 at the ATP tournament in Geneva. The Austrian won the first set 6:4 with a passionate performance. In the second set, the Norwegian got better and better into the match and won two breaks to prevail 6:2. Ruud finally pulled away in the third set and again won the deciding set 6:2.

Sebastian Ofner from Styria was eliminated in his dress rehearsal for the French Open on Wednesday in the round of 16 in Geneva, albeit after a strong performance. He impressed against the Norwegian number two seed Casper Ruud, especially in the first set, before losing 6:4, 2:6, 2:6 to the seventh-ranked player in the world. Ruud won the Geneva title in 2021 and 2022 and has only lost in the final at the French Open in the past two years.

With a 2:0 lead behind him, the Norwegian seemed to be heading for another victory early on in the second duel between the two, but Ofner struck back impressively. Not only did he level the score at 2:2, the Austrian number one broke again to make it 4:2 and did not let this advantage slip away.

Ofner thrilled the crowd with his aggressive, precise play, Ruud was only a passenger at times. Of course, the Norwegian stepped on the gas in the second set. He took the service from Ofner to lead 3:1 and took the serve for the start of set three with a break to 6:2.

It was the same story in the deciding set, as Ofner was only able to fend off one of two break points when trailing 1:2. Of course, the world number 45, who came out of qualifying, continued to use the opportunity to gain confidence for the clay court classic at Roland Garros, where the draw will take place on Thursday (2 p.m.), with good moments such as a service game to nil. However, it was not enough to turn the set around and achieve his first success against a top ten player. Ruud celebrated his 32nd match win of the season after 1:47 hours.
