Recurrence: Suddenly the cancer is back
A cancer diagnosis is a heavy blow, but the "bad word" recurrence is usually even worse. This means a relapse. More and more celebrities are now talking openly about their multiple illnesses. Why does a tumor come back and what does this mean for patients?
Cancer patients usually find a relapse far more threatening than the initial diagnosis. The most common question after treatment is therefore: "Am I cured or will the cancer come back?" Doctors are still unable to answer this with certainty. Why a patient appears to be cured and the tumor strikes again years or even decades later depends on various factors. It also depends on whether the disease is easily treatable or life-threatening, as Prof. Dr. Johannes Drach, Medical Director of the Confraternität Private Clinic in Vienna, explains.
