Outwitting cancer
How the immune system helps to fight tumors
Every year, over 40,000 people in Austria are diagnosed with cancer. Thanks to ever more modern treatment options, their treatment prospects are more successful than ever. New individual options are constantly being researched. Today, it is becoming increasingly possible to use the body's own immune system in the treatment process. Viennese oncologist Prof. Dr. Heinz Ludwig explains exactly how this works and whether we can soon expect a vaccination against cancer.
The body's immune system is a finely balanced system, the "police force", so to speak, that protects our body from infections and threats. If viruses, bacteria or other pathogens enter the organism, they are recognized as "foreign" and attacked. Specific defense proteins (antibodies) and activated cells then attack the intruders. Sometimes, however, cancer cells can outsmart the system - a case for immunotherapy!
