Horrific accident in Lower Austria
10 reasons: This is why there are crashes on our roads
The high death toll on Austria's roads leaves no one indifferent. On Thursday evening, a car with six occupants crashed into a traffic circle without braking. Four people were killed. The "Krone" newspaper uses an interactive map to show the accident hotspots across the country and lists ten reasons why there are so many fatal crashes.
The car was traveling on the B17 from Neunkirchen in the direction of Wiener Neustadt, with six construction workers of foreign origin on board, who had raced straight into the traffic circle without braking. Five of them were thrown from the car. The stretch of road is known to be dangerous, as there is a long straight before the traffic circle that encourages drivers to accelerate.
These human tragedies on asphalt are almost never predictable; only in retrospect can data be collected, evaluated and lessons learned. 396 people were killed in accidents on Austria's roads in 2023. The figures and causes for this year already indicate similar patterns as the end of the six-month period approaches (see interactive map below).
The fatal causes of accidents, ranked by frequency, should also give all road users food for thought:
