Fire department rescues Styrian from smoky apartment

A man had to be rescued from his smoky apartment in Leoben on Saturday night. Residents of the house had raised the alarm because smoke was billowing into the stairwell. A pot forgotten on the stove was probably to blame.

On Saturday night, the Leoben-Stadt and Leoben-Göss volunteer fire departments were alerted to a suspected fire. Residents had heard a strong smell of smoke in the stairwell of an apartment building. When the emergency services arrived, it was unclear where the smoke was coming from. In order to find out which apartment it was, the firefighters had to check the outside of the building using a turntable ladder.

Using a turntable ladder, the firefighters were able to scout the affected apartment.

When they recognized the affected apartment, they opened the apartment door with heavy breathing protection and found the resident in the middle of the smoke. They were able to rescue him outside and hand him over to the Red Cross for treatment. The smoke was probably caused by a pot of food that had been left on the hot stove. In this context, the fire departments would like to point out the life-saving function of smoke alarms.
