Styria: Thunderstorm warning with “large hail”

Explosive air masses could soon cause the next severe weather: the first showers and thunderstorms are expected from the afternoon hours - including hail and squalls. There's a heat warning for tomorrow.

"The basic ingredients for severe thunderstorms are there", says Steffen Dietz from Ubimet to the "Krone" on Thursday morning. "The air is hot and humid, i.e. very energetic, and there is also a lot of wind shear, i.e. dynamic up and down winds - ideal conditions for hail."

Difficult forecast
Skywarn Austria is also alarmed: "Large to very large hail" would then be possible from the evening hours. The north of Styria could be particularly affected, but the mountains of Graz could also be hit.

Dietz emphasizes that this is not yet certain: "For a storm to be triggered, the air has to rise. That can happen today - but it doesn't have to," says the expert. The Sahara dust is currently making the forecast even more difficult.

Heat warning for Friday
It's going to get really hot on Friday: the 35 degree mark could be exceeded for the first time, with the south of the country particularly affected.

A cold front will move through on Saturday night and temperatures will stabilize at 22 to 28 degrees over the weekend. According to Dietz, the next week will then be "very friendly". The forecast is for 23 to 28 degrees.
