Orbán’s European Championship escort involved in serious accident

The escort of Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was involved in a serious accident in Stuttgart on Monday. One police officer was killed in the accident. Orbán had attended his team's European Championship match against Scotland the day before.

The Hungarian head of government was on his way to Stuttgart airport when a serious crash occurred at a junction. His vehicle was not involved, but two police motorcycles were. According to the police, the driver of a BMW (69) overlooked a barrier and crashed into one of the motorcycles. A 61-year-old officer was sitting on the motorcycle and was thrown against another police motorcycle along with his emergency vehicle.

The 61-year-old suffered extremely serious injuries and succumbed to them shortly afterwards in hospital. His 27-year-old colleague, who had just cordoned off the affected intersection, was also seriously injured.

Police colleagues shocked
"We are deeply shocked by the accident involving our colleagues. We are stunned by the tragic circumstances surrounding the death of our esteemed colleague and are deeply saddened by the entire Stuttgart police force. Our thoughts are with his family, relatives and friends. We send our best wishes for a speedy recovery to the colleague who was also seriously injured in the accident," the police headquarters in Stuttgart announced.
