Tumor often aggressive
After ski star’s death: Bowel cancer also affects young people!
The Italian former ski racer Elena Fanchini died of bowel cancer at the age of just 37. A malignant tumor in the bowel is one of the three most common forms of cancer - in both men and women. Experts explain how bowel cancer develops, what the chances of a cure are and why regular screening can save lives.
Most patients are over 60 when they are diagnosed, but oncologists are registering an increase in bowel cancer cases in people under 50. This type of cancer is also widespread in this country. Around one in 17 Austrians will develop a carcinoma in the colon or rectum in the course of their lives. For more than half of the 4700 people affected each year, the cancer is fatal. "Yet bowel cancer could have been - almost - checkmated long ago," reports surgeon and prevention specialist Dr. Friedrich Weiser from the Medico Chirurgicum health insurance center in Vienna-Liesing. According to the expert, more than 90 percent of cases could be prevented.
