Pyrotechnics allowed in Norway thanks to pilot project

In Norway, selected pyrotechnics will be allowed at some soccer matches under certain conditions!

The exception for flares and smoke cans will be granted for a limited period for the 2024 and 2025 seasons in a pilot project, as announced by the Norwegian government. However, the permission is linked to strict rules for the stadiums, fans and the selected items and is subject to strict safety checks.

"The use of flares is part of the fan culture in Norway. They create a great atmosphere and backdrop at soccer matches, provided they are used in a safe and responsible manner," affirmed Norway's Minister of Culture, Lubna Jaffery.

The use of flares in the Norwegian soccer stands has long been the subject of debate in the country. In the spring, the Norwegian Football Association, the Norsk Toppfotball Association and the Women's Toppfotball Kvinner Association applied for an exemption from the current regulations on the use of selected pyrotechnics in order to bring the use of flares within a safe framework.
