Cancellation! Murray is denied a worthy farewell

Two-time champion Andy Murray wanted to compete at his home tournament in Wimbledon for the last time this year - but the time after his back operation ten days ago was too short and the 37-year-old Brit had to withdraw on Tuesday morning.

"I want to experience it again, soak it up and enjoy it - this tournament has given me so much in my career," said Andy Murray at Media Day on Saturday. The 37-year-old Brit tried everything - but the three-time Grand Slam winner was denied a well-deserved farewell at Wimbledon! Murray had to withdraw from the singles competition with an injury after a final test on Tuesday morning shortly before his first-round appearance.

"Sad and disappointed"
Just ten days ago, the former world number one had undergone back surgery to have a cyst removed after retiring from the Queens Club in London. The race against time was lost. "Andy is incredibly sad and disappointed," his team said in an initial statement. However, Murray will at least try his hand at doubles, competing alongside his brother Jamie one last time as an active player at the All England Lawn Tennis Club.

Hero status at Wimbledon
The Scot, who initially had a hard time with the English fans, celebrated the greatest successes of his injury-plagued career on Wimbledon's Center Court. In 2012, he won Olympic gold in the final against Roger Federer, and in 2013 and 2016 he became the first Briton since Fred Perry in 1936 to win a Grand Slam title on the "holy grass". Murray has enjoyed hero status in London ever since.
