Goldsmith artists get their own lane

Their work is appreciated: and that's why women jewelry craftsmen in Gmünd are being given their own lane.  

After a walk through the artists' town, it quickly becomes clear: unlike other Carinthian towns, Gmünd does not have to struggle with vacancies. "Almost all of our stores are full," says Mayor Josef Jury happily, describing his municipality as a well-functioning shopping center. "Because you can find everything you need here. But the parking facilities directly in front of the stores also play their part," emphasizes Jury.

And while there is not a single goldsmith to be found in other towns, there are three in one alleyway in Gmünd. Jury: "In total, there are three women who make their own high-quality jewelry and sell it locally."

No competition
Gabriele Andres, Astrid Perauer and Andrea Kratzwald do not see themselves as competitors. "Rather, we complement each other, because each of us works individually and uniquely - we provide a variety of offerings," the three jewelry makers, who have their studios right next to each other, agree.

Artists get their own alley
And because visitors are often amazed at the number of goldsmiths, the municipality has decided to rename Hintere Gasse and Kirchgasse Goldschmiedgasse. "As a sign of appreciation," says Jury.

Of course, the sign with the words Goldschmiedgasse will only be symbolically placed in the archway. "Officially, the original names will remain. Because changing street names is a procedure," says Jury. Elisa Aschbacher
