Peace and seclusion - that's what many campers dream of. However, due to overcrowding, there has been little sign of this on official sites recently. Motorhome owners and the like are therefore increasingly drawn to the "wilderness", where there are sometimes hefty penalties. Here we reveal how you can definitely spend the night in the great outdoors more cheaply, at best even free of charge and, what's more, completely legally.

Camping is booming - not only, but especially since Corona, when traveling abroad was difficult or even impossible and hotels were closed. According to Statistics Austria, the number of newly registered motorhomes rose from 2969 in 2020 to 5126 in the following year, while the number of caravans and trailers quadrupled in the same period, jumping from 998 to 4204. Most recently (as of 2022), there were almost 40,000 motorhomes and more than 41,600 caravans in Austria. However, people still camp in tents, albeit less frequently (eight percent).
