Etna volcano has grown due to eruptions

Europe's largest active volcano, Mount Etna in Sicily, has grown due to the recent volcanic eruptions at the Voragine crater and now exceeds the height of the south-east crater, which was previously the highest point on the mountain. This was revealed by measurements taken with drones.

As reported by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), a new cone has formed around the mouth of the Voragine crater, which in a few days has reached a height of several dozen meters above the point where the volcanic activity began.

Measurements carried out by INGV experts with drones on 5 July showed that the eastern rim of the Voragine had risen by 107 meters and had thus reached the same height as the southeast crater: 3354 meters.

Another eruption, which occurred in the early hours of 7 July at the same mouth of the Voragine, increased the thickness of the deposits and the height of the eastern crater rim even further, so that it is now 3369 meters according to drone measurements. According to the INGV, this is the greatest height of Mount Etna ever measured.

"Looking inside the volcano"
Drone footage taken by photographer and mountain guide Emilio Messina on Thursday shows the Voragine crater, which at 3369 meters above sea level is now the highest point on Mount Etna. "In this video, we literally look inside a volcano. We can take a look inside the crater, which is the new summit."

You can also observe something rare in the footage: During the eruptions, when the volcano ejects gas and lava, you can even see the huge pressure wave that is created.
