Croatia: Five people shot dead in retirement home

After the shooting in the old people's home in Daruvar, the shooter fled. According to media reports, he was caught in a café not far from the scene of the crime.

A man shot and killed at least six people in a retirement home in Croatia on Monday. This was reported by local media.

The perpetrator is said to have entered the retirement home in the inland town of Daruvar (around 130 kilometers east of the capital Zagreb) and opened fire.

Shooter arrested
The shooter is said to have fled at first, but was quickly arrested by police in a café. Local media reported that the shooter was a veteran born in 1973. It is possible that the perpetrator worked as a criminal defense lawyer before his bloody deed.

According to a report by state broadcaster HRT, the victims include the mother of the shooter as well as other residents and employees of the facility. 

Six other injured people were also treated in hospital, four of them with gunshot wounds to the body and head.

Perpetrator was already known to the police
Croatia's police director Nikola Milina confirmed the arrest of the suspect, who had an unregistered handgun with him, Croatian media reported. The man was known to the police for violent crimes. There was initially no information on the motive for the crime. According to the Minister of Family and Social Affairs, Marin Piletić, the mother of the perpetrator, who was also killed in the attack, had been cared for in an old people's home for ten years. According to information from the nursing home, there were no problems between the two, and the son is said to have visited his mother only rarely.
