A soldier in Great Britain has been stabbed and seriously injured. Police officers arrested a 24-year-old on suspicion of attempted murder. The victim is said to be in a serious but stable condition. 

Investigators were alerted on Tuesday evening, according to the police in the English county of Kent. The motive for the attack is still unclear. According to the British news agency PA, investigators are not assuming a terrorist motive. "The motive for the attack is currently unknown and is part of our ongoing investigation," the police said. A connection with mental health problems is being investigated.

British prime minister "shocked"
"I am shocked and appalled by the news that a soldier has been attacked in Kent," wrote British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on the X platform. His thoughts are with the soldier, his family and the armed forces. "I wish him a speedy recovery."

According to PA, the soldier, who is aged between 40 and 50, was attacked near a barracks in Gillingham. The suspect is believed to have fled on a motorcycle. Investigators later arrested him and seized several knives. "We will continue to work closely with Kent Police to understand what happened and to assist the investigation," PA quoted an army spokesman as saying.
