Why heart attacks in women are so often fatal
Although women usually suffer heart attacks later, they die from them just as often as men - like Christina Sandera, Clint Eastwood's long-time girlfriend (94) , who recently died at the age of 61. The female sex is at a disadvantage when it comes to heart disease, not only due to biological differences, but also in terms of medical care. What constitutes a "female heart attack".
The fact that a heart attack is still seen as a disease of stressed men "is simply wrong. There urgently needs to be a rethink - both among medical professionals and among women themselves," emphasizes Prof. Dr. Margarethe Hochleitner, for many years Director of the Institute for Gender Medicine and Diversity at MedUni Innsbruck in Tyrol. Prejudices and misconceptions are not only evident at the GP, but also in the emergency room. The fatal consequences are ultimately confirmed by current mortality statistics.
