McLaren's youngster duo continue to turn up the heat in the 2024 Formula 1 summer: Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri took 1st and 2nd place in the 2nd free practice session for the Belgian Grand Prix ahead of world champion Max Verstappen!

Norris also set the fastest time of the day with a lap in 1:42.260 minutes. This put him 0.215 seconds ahead of Piastri and 0.217 ahead of Max Verstappen.

In the championship standings, Verstappen continues to lead Norris by a comfortable 76 points ahead of the 14th of 24 races this season. In the constructors' championship, McLaren is 51 points behind Red Bull.

Engine swap for Verstappen 
Verstappen, however, goes into the last race before the summer break with the mortgage of an engine swap to show for it. As overtaking maneuvers are easier on the circuit in the Ardennes, Red Bull Racing and the three-time champion decided to move him back ten places.

The Belgian-born Dutchman already exceeded the permitted limit on power units, which is why he will have to start a race to catch up in the last race before the month-long summer break.

"We had quite a positive start today and still have some things to work on from second practice, so there's a lot to do," said Verstappen.

"Hopefully all the changes we've made will come to fruition, especially as I'll be starting at the back of the grid in the race due to the engine penalty. However, we will try to optimize the car as much as possible. Of course, you always want to have a good qualifying, but our focus is on the race."
