Excursion boat caught fire on Lake Traunsee

Major operation on Lake Traunsee! At midday on Saturday, numerous alarms were sounded by fire departments and water rescue services around Gmunden because a fire had broken out on an excursion boat. Fortunately, it was only a small fire and all passengers were brought to safety.

Once again, the outcome was not too bad! A major alarm with an increased warning level was triggered at 12.40 p.m. on Saturday - a Traunsee excursion boat, the "MS Karl Eder", was on fire. Six fire departments were called out immediately, two more and the Traunkirchen and Ebensee water rescue services were alerted shortly afterwards.

Short circuit was to blame
A short circuit had occurred on the main terminal of the power generator in the area of the power supply for the on-board electrical system. This caused smoke to develop in the engine room. This happened during the mooring maneuver to the landing stage on Lake Traunsee. There were 15 guests on board at the time and the smoke was first noticed and reported by a passenger.

Staff extinguished the fire
The smoke was extinguished by the ship's crew using a foam extinguisher. The ship's propulsion was not affected by the short circuit. After the extinguishing work was completed, the ship was taken to the Weyer landing stage for repairs accompanied by a fire boat. No one was injured.
