Liefering narrowly lose opener against Vienna

First game, first defeat: Liefering are beaten by Vienna in the first round of the second division. A joker goal made the difference in the end. The young bulls missed many chances in stoppage time.

A start that they had not imagined. Liefering lose their second league opener against Vienna by the narrow margin of 0:1. "The first half wasn't at all what we had planned. We had a lot of individual ideas on the pitch, but not the ones we had planned," said coach Daniel Beichler, who was very dissatisfied.

The young bulls appeared in front of their opponents' goal after just 15 seconds, but chances were in short supply for a long time after that. The game rippled along like the rain in between. In the 37th minute, Vienna's Kelvin Boateng missed the lead by a hair's breadth. In the 62nd minute, the visitors took the lead through Joker Schmidt.

The Lieferingen side improved towards the end and had several chances to equalize in the five minutes of stoppage time. "We were the better team in a poor second division match and lost," was the coach's summary.

Defender John Mellberg was at a loss shortly after the end of the game as to why the young Bulls left the pitch as losers: "I don't know, to be honest. I think we got better and better the longer the game went on. We defended very solidly."

In the end, it was a case of déjà vu, as the previous clash with the Viennese on May 10 was also lost 1-0 in front of a home crowd. In the end, it was to be the only defeat Beichler suffered in seven games as interim coach. Next Friday, they travel to Lafnitz in his native Styria.
