Passenger plane crashes: 62 people on board

A plane with 62 people on board has crashed in the Brazilian state of São Paulo. This was announced by the Brazilian airline VoePass.

In the residential area of Recanto Florido - around 80 kilometers from the metropolis of São Paulo - the plane crashed dramatically to the ground near a highway, according to the authorities. As videos circulated on social media show, the plane spun uncontrollably around itself.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed his deep shock on Friday and called for a minute's silence. The tragedy occurred in the city of Vinhedo, the airline revealed.

Dense smoke rises
The news portal "G1" published a video showing the plane falling from the sky at enormous speed. Black smoke can then be seen. Hospitals were alerted and the fire department is deployed with seven rescue teams.

The ATR-72 aircraft was on its way from Cascavel in the state of Paraná in the south of the country to Guarulhos near the city of São Paulo, reported the website G1, citing Voepass. She is said to have been 14 years old.

The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, said: "My solidarity goes out to all the victims and those affected by this tragedy." He promised to provide all necessary support and to publish all necessary information. Lula made a similar statement on X: "Very sad news. All my condolences to the families and friends of the victims."
