Hunter’s son shoots woman with his father’s gun

The civil defense called on residents not to leave their homes during the operation.

There has been a major operation in South Tyrol due to a violent crime. A 48-year-old man shot a neighbor and his father, who was in need of care. According to Italian media reports, the son of a former hunting warden committed his crimes with a weapon belonging to his father. He then barricaded himself in his house for several hours.

The civil defense called on residents in the municipality of San Candido not to leave their homes.

Special forces stormed the house
As the Italian broadcaster RAI reported, shots were fired again in the house on Sunday morning. The house was the home of the perpetrator, where he lived with his father, who was in need of care.

When rescue workers reached the scene, they were also shot at, it was reported. The perpetrator then allegedly fired at the police officers as well. Special forces finally stormed the building.

Perpetrator died in hospital
The perpetrator is said to have turned the gun on himself when the house was stormed. He was critically injured. He finally died in Bolzano hospital in the evening.

At midday on Sunday, the civil defense lifted its warning. In a statement, it said: "The police operation has ended, there is no longer any danger to the population."

The first emergency call was received late on Saturday evening at 11.20 pm. According to the report, the San Candido fire department had been alerted to the smell of gas.
