A tire caught fire in the Oswaldibergtunnel

While driving through the Oswaldibergtunnel in Villach, a tire of a camper trailer caught fire on Tuesday afternoon.

Shortly before 1 p.m. on Tuesday, the Villach main fire station, the Vassach fire brigade and the Töplitsch fire brigade were alerted to an incident on the A10 Tauernautobahn in the direction of Villach. A tire of a camper trailer loaded with a small car had caught fire 600 meters before the end of the Oswaldiber tunnel due to a tire blowout.

The driver, who is fortunately a firefighter himself, was able to maneuver the trailer out of the tunnel. Using a fire extinguisher, he managed to contain the fire before the emergency services arrived.

 Under the direction of Harald Geissler from the Villach main fire station, the firefighters carried out extinguishing work using a fire extinguishing line and a thermal imaging camera.

The vehicle and trailer were taken to the Lindenhof campsite, where only a stopover had been planned - the vacation was to be enjoyed in Croatia. Despite the incident, the camping vacation could continue, as the motorhome and car remained undamaged.

The car trailer was removed from the scene by a private towing company. 

A total of around 25 firefighters were deployed. They were supported by the Villach highway police, the Asfinag road service and a private towing company.
