Significant drop in births last year

Despite a slight decline in births, the midwives and doctors on the maternity wards in Carinthian hospitals had their hands full last year. A total of 3893 newborns saw the light of day.

As in previous years, Klagenfert Hospital was the undisputed leader in the number of births. The Perinatal Center Carinthia recorded 1636 births with 1670 children - 20 fewer than in the previous year. "Twins were born 34 times in 2022," summarizes Prim. Priv.-Doz. Dr. Johannes Lermann, Head of Gynaecology and Obstetrics at the hospital. "The heaviest child - a boy - weighed 4945 grams, the lightest, also a boy, only 730 grams," explains the head midwife, Christina Kulle. In the month with the highest birth rate, August (156), 52 fewer babies were born than in the month with the lowest birth rate, February (104).

The Villach Regional Hospital also gave birth to 1093 children in 1063 births.

It is remarkable that there was already an increase of 10 twin births in the previous year 2021 compared to 2020. In Draustadt, the midwives counted 588 boys and 505 girls compared to last year. The lightest baby, a boy, weighed 540 grams, while the heaviest newborn, also a boy, weighed 4900 grams. As in ELKI Klagenfurt, the month with the highest birth rate was August with 110 births and the lowest was March with 76. 

256 girls and 258 boys at LKH Wolfsberg
Compared to the previous year, when 532 births were recorded, 514 babies made their first cry at 512 births at LKH Wolfsberg in the Lavanttal - there were twins twice. Of the newborns, 256 were girls and 258 were boys. Most babies were born in January (51), June (50) and November (50), the fewest in March (34), followed by December (35).

Happy start to life at St. Veit an der Glan Hospital
Last year, the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics said "Welcome to life!" to 616 babies who were brought into the world by the obstetrics team at the Barmherzige Brüder Hospital in St. Veit an der Glan. A total of 318 girls and 298 boys saw the light of day. The months with the highest birth rates in St. Veit were September and December. Compared to previous years, a drop in births was recorded in 2022, although the number has remained extremely stable over the multi-year trend.

The hospital also adds that every third child in St. Veit was born by caesarean section. In 2022, 190 caesarean sections were performed, which clearly corresponds to the current Austrian trend.
