A digital laboratory that optimizes transport networks

Klagenfurt's Lakeside Park has a new laboratory facility: "digital twins" simulate urban and rural infrastructure.

Thanks to this innovation, expensive prototypes are replaced by simulations and can be used in industry, energy networks, urban development and many other areas. Starting this year, the research company Joanneum Research and DIGITAL will set up a TwinLab - a "digital twin laboratory" - in Klagenfurt's Lakeside Park, which can create 3D models of entire regions. Digital twins virtually depict what is happening in reality, so to speak. The state of Carinthia is supporting the laboratory's construction phase with one million euros.

Into the digital future with state-of-the-art measurement technology
"In the future, we will spend much more time in virtual spaces and must remain fit for the future and focus even more intensively on digital twins," explains Heinz Mayer, Managing Director of Joanneum Research. "State-of-the-art measurement technology such as mobile mapping systems - i.e. cameras on cars -, laser scanning drones or backpack systems worn by people are used to generate data," says Matthias Rüther, Digital Director. Governor Kaiser: "In conclusion, we can say that this modern facility is an important step towards a digital future, which can save us from failure and practical consequences."
