62-year-old ignites handkerchief: cellar fire

For unknown reasons, a 62-year-old man in Bad St. Leonhard (Carinthia) ignited a paper handkerchief in the cellar of an apartment building on Sunday evening and threw it into a plastic bucket. It was not until a short time later that he noticed the smoke.

When the man noticed the smoke coming from the cellar, he immediately began trying to extinguish the fire, but to no avail. The emergency services alerted were able to carry out extinguishing and ventilation work immediately. At the same time, the fire department was able to bring other residents from the apartment building to safety. Two people were taken to Wolfsberg Regional Hospital due to mild smoke inhalation.

Temporary uninhabitability
Due to the current conditions, the remaining residents of the apartment complex were temporarily housed in alternative accommodation.

Four people could be accommodated in the Gasthof Geiger in Bad St. Leonhard, the others spent the night in private households.

Seven fire departments were deployed with a total of 132 personnel, including seven breathing apparatus teams, the rescue service and the police.
