New acquisitions
Lake Faak is also ready for the start of the season
Lake cleaning, new purchases, admission prices: The "Krone" asked what bathers can expect this season.
Even if the past few days haven't suggested it: Life is slowly returning to the Carinthian lakes! Lake Faaker See, Austria's southernmost lake, is also well prepared for the upcoming summer season. The lake has been well prepared over the winter and the jetties and sunbathing lawns have been spruced up. One of the three lidos in Villach is Panorama Beach in Drobollach. There are two large sunbathing lawns on 8700 square meters. Sun worshippers and swimming fans get their money's worth here - and it's free.
Among other things, the jetty area at this former Bernold pool has been modernized this year. Charging stations for e-bikes and e-cars have been installed so that bathers can make their way back with fully charged batteries after a fun-filled day on the water. "But it's not just Panorama Beach that is now equipped for e-mobility, the lido in Egg also has corresponding facilities," explains Eva Meißnitzer, press officer for the town of Villach.
Facts and figures about Lake Faak
Key facts about the lake:
- Area: 2.2 km² - making it the fifth largest lake in Carinthia in terms of area
- Length: 2.3 km
- Width: 1.7 km
- Deepest point: 29.5 m
- Average depth: 16.1 m
- The lake is 554 m above sea level.
- A walk around Lake Faak is around 12 km (11.8 km).
The Faaker See island:
The wooded island with an area of around 80,400 m² divides the lake into two basins. The island rises up to 12 m above the water level.
The lake water:
The main tributary of the lake is the "Worounitza stream", which rises under the Mittagskogel and is responsible for the turquoise-blue color of the water. Very fine lime particles are added to the lake, which reflect turquoise when the light falls on them.
The water temperature:
On hot summer days, the water temperature can reach a maximum of 27 degrees, although the average temperature is usually around 22 degrees. The current water temperature is 8 degrees - as of April 18, 2023.
Private property and motorboat ban:
Lake Faak has been privately owned by two families since 1924. Apart from the hotel shuttle boat, only motorboats belonging to the emergency services are permitted on Lake Faak.
Lift for the disabled
This lido has also been upgraded in terms of accessibility and the facility has been made more attractive for guests with disabilities. Meißnitzer: "As the old wheelchair ramp was difficult or almost impossible to use and clean, it was removed and replaced by a disabled-accessible lift directly on the jetty." The town of Villach's third bathing beach on Lake Faak is the Tschebull meadow.
Entrance fees unchanged
Half of the lake with its turquoise-blue water, which is privately owned, lies in Villach and the other half in the municipality of Finkenstein. The latter is responsible for the free access to the lake at the settlers' beach and the peninsula beach access, among other things, and operates the Finkenstein municipal beach pool, better known to most as the Nivea pool. There wasn't much to do here over the winter months this year. "There aren't many new things for us this season. But of course we are doing our best to offer good quality as always. Admission prices remain unchanged this year. Despite the price increases in all areas, we are not considering any increases," promises Finkenstein Mayor Christian Poglitsch.
New for the water rescue center
One innovation that does not directly affect the Nivea pool is the new construction of the boathouse for the water rescuers stationed at the lido. "The boathouse is made entirely of durable larch wood. It enables the water rescue team to store their large rescue boat in such a way that it is protected from the weather. This means that the water rescuers will be ready for action 365 days a year in future," explains Poglitsch.
The water rescuers not only make sure that there are no dangerous incidents on the lake, they also keep an eye on the environment and carry out an annual lake clean-up. "Every year, our divers pick up several hundred kilograms of garbage - from household waste to bicycles - and then dispose of it properly," says head of operations Michael Siter, who would be delighted to welcome new recruits to the water rescue team.
