Graz: Pedestrian collided with streetcar

Major rescue operation in Graz on Tuesday afternoon. A pedestrian collided with a streetcar and was trapped under the train. Unfortunately, rescue efforts came too late and he succumbed to his serious injuries at the scene of the accident.

The accident between the pedestrian and the streetcar is said to have occurred shortly after 12 noon. The trapped man was quickly freed by the arriving patrol from the Schmiedgasse police station and the Graz professional fire department, but the resuscitation attempts were unfortunately unsuccessful. The injuries were too severe.

Rail replacement service set up
Initial investigations are currently underway at the scene of the accident. The exact course of events is still unclear. Witnesses report that the man is said to have run into the streetcar between the second and third doors. He presumably wanted to pick up a drinks can that had fallen to the ground, lost his balance and fell against the approaching streetcar. He then fell under the iron wheels.

The police are asking onlookers in the city center to follow the instructions of the emergency services and to respect the barriers. A rail replacement service with buses was set up between Jakominiplatz and Laudongasse and between Jakominiplatz and Andritz.

In the evening, the police announced that the victim of this terrible accident was a 36-year-old man from Graz.
