Threat received: large-scale police operation in Graz!

Large-scale police operation in Graz: the area around the Kepler grammar school was cordoned off on Tuesday morning. The background to this was an explosives threat that the police received by email. A school in Linz was also evacuated at the same time following a similar threat.

The entire Keplerstrasse in Graz-Lend had to be closed on Tuesday morning, and the grammar school, primary and secondary school and several other buildings in the vicinity were evacuated. Public transport in the area was diverted and the police asked people to avoid the area.

"Keep calm!"
"Large-scale cordon measures have been put in place. Keep calm and follow the instructions of the emergency services," wrote the Styrian police on X. They also asked parents and guardians not to attempt to enter the cordoned-off area.

Connection with station threats?
Explosives experts were also on site. They were last at work in Graz just over a week ago, when there was a threat of attack against the main and eastern railway stations - as it turned out, the first in a long series that kept the whole of Austria on tenterhooks. It is still unclear whether there is a connection with the current situation, but according to police spokesman Sabri Yorgun, the nature of the threat is certainly comparable.

Police drones on the school grounds
The school grounds were meticulously inspected with drones. As this did not reveal any acute danger, the lockdown measures were lifted in the early afternoon.

Pupils kept their nerve
The hundreds of schoolchildren affected were in a good mood at the "Krone" site inspection. They had to drop everything and most of them at least managed to pack up their cell phones. The teachers asked them to contact their parents and let them know that they were safe. The children were also kept entertained with movement games. There was no sign of a crisis.

At lunchtime, the upper school pupils were released, while the younger ones remained under the care of the teaching staff. Principal Franz Riegler from the BRG Kepler explained to the "Krone" that the procedure with the assembly point at Lendplatz was already tried and tested practice from the regular evacuation drills. Most of the students initially thought the situation was a drill and kept their nerve.

Similar cases in Linz and Salzburg
A similar threat was received in Upper Austria at almost the same time. At 10 a.m., a threat was made to attack the Ramsauergymnasium in Linz. Here, too, the school was immediately evacuated and investigations are ongoing. The previous evening, the Europark shopping center in Salzburg had to be evacuated shortly before closing time following a dangerous threat. No suspicious material was found.
