Summer proves that girls are perfect for technology: the 16-year-old is currently completing an apprenticeship as a mechanical engineering technician at voestalpine Precision Strip. In her second year of training, Summer is already fully integrated into the company in Böhlerwerk

It's easy to explain why Summer opted for a technical apprenticeship after finishing polytechnic school in St. Peter. "Even before that, I liked working with my dad in his workshop," says the 16-year-old from Biberbach. An acquaintance who works at voestalpine himself then drew her attention to the site in Böhlerwerk. "I was particularly impressed by the many different areas I was able to get a taste of," says Summer, who is currently in her second year of training as a mechanical engineering technician.

Mechanical engineers plan, design and manufacture machines, equipment and systems that are used in industry.

"I like working on the machines, turning, milling and grinding," says Summer. "The manual work really suits me. But a lot of our work is also done on the computer." The apprentices are already being fully utilized in the company: "It's great that we are already receiving orders and producing workpieces that are really needed."

She would like to encourage other girls to take the plunge into technology: "There are so many different professions, the job prospects are great, and you also learn things that you can use in everyday life."
