After the knife murder of a 65-year-old woman in Zistersdorf (Lower Austria), the suspected perpetrator has been tracked down. The man had entrenched himself in a wine cellar near the scene of the crime. After several attempts to apprehend him, it is now known: The murder suspect is dead! He is said to have blown himself up.

The first attempt in the early hours of the morning failed and a Cobra officer was seriously injured. The man is said to have suffered splinter injuries to his face and ankle during the operation. On Friday morning, it was finally decided to make an arrest. The personnel were changed on the spot. The Cobra arrived with gas masks and an armored vehicle.

Blew himself up
A short time later, bangs could be heard. Witnesses first suspected gunshots, but now we know that the suspect had blown himself up. The emergency services then blew open the door to the cellar. As the "Krone" learned at around 1.30 p.m., the 59-year-old was already dead at this point.

The area around the press house, under which the wine cellar in which the murder suspect had barricaded himself is located, had already been cordoned off on Friday evening. Heavily armed police units secured the area. Before the Cobra finally seized the man, the officers are said to have repeatedly called on him via a megaphone to finally surrender. "Leave the building," was announced in English and German.

Booby trap detonated on first police contact
The first contact with the Slovakian man, who was urgently suspected of murder, took place in the early hours of the morning. The man had detonated a booby trap when the police tried to approach him. The hiding place of the wanted man was only a few hundred meters as the crow flies from the scene of the crime, where a horrific act of bloodshed had taken place on Friday afternoon.

The suspect was near the scene of the crime and was observed fleeing, reported Chief Inspector Johann Baumschlager. There was "obviously an acquaintance relationship between the victim and the perpetrator". According to media reports, the Slovakian is said to have contacted another acquaintance after the crime. He is said to have told him that he had done something bad. However, he did not say anything about the murder.

An autopsy of the victim was ordered by the public prosecutor's office in Korneuburg.

Place partially evacuated
A large police force had been searching for the man since Friday evening. According to the police, he had a criminal record in several countries for the illegal possession of weapons, explosives and even nuclear explosive devices. The Cobra special unit, several helicopters and search dogs were also already in action at this time. The police had asked all residents to follow the officers' instructions. During the search, the Zistersdorf cadastral community of Gösting, which has around 300 inhabitants, was also partially evacuated.

"Generally dangerous" person
Baumschlager announced at a press conference arranged at short notice that the Cobra officer's injuries were not life-threatening. "Nevertheless, he sustained serious injuries", said Baumschlager. In addition to Cobra, 120 officers from the provincial police headquarters and explosives experts as well as 65 Red Cross employees were also deployed.

The police spokesman once again appealed to the population in the immediate vicinity to follow the instructions of the police. It was a "generally dangerous" person. The residents are beside themselves - they are currently in the town hall of Zistersdorf. Many are close to tears. They are said to have asked the police to be allowed to evacuate their dogs and cats.

The townscape of Zistersdorf was dominated by emergency services on Saturday morning. Numerous roadblocks were set up and the cadastral municipality of Gösting was partially cordoned off. Extensive identity checks were carried out.
